Description

Name: Orbhog (evolved from the Hedgehog) ((yay I finally made a mammal species))

Habitat: Savannahs and desserts (can live in other regions though)

Food: It's usually a carnivore, eating insects, rodents, lizards, small to medium sized species of birds, and eggs, it will also eat fish when it gets the chance. But sometimes it will eat plant material, such as seeds, short grass, carrots and fruits.

Anatomy: They have their quills evolved into a hard leathery shell-like structure. They can close themselves and tuck in their tails through a hole and roll into a ball. They have specially adapted muscles to push themselves forward while in ball form, allowing them to roll into any direction they want. They also have specially adapted leg muscles that move and twitch in amazing speeds, when they run, their legs look like a blur, which is how they can move at incredible speeds (can out run humans and horses!) And these specialized muscles are necessary for running fast, because there is not much room for the legs to move due to the shells. They have large lungs and hearts to allow them to have amazing stamina and incredible speeds. They have a very fast metabolism rate, the average heart rate for a male is 500 beats per minute, while the average heart rate for a female is 600 beats per minute. The colors of the females range from darkest lush brown to tawny apricot, while the colors for males range from deep brownish gold to lightest lemony yellow. The males also have very fluffy red or brown tails, cheek fluff, elbow fluff, head tuft, and ankle fluff to attract females during mating season (which can be any season). Females have a bit of fluffy fur almost at the end of their tails to signal others and to swat away flies. The tails are prehensile for both genders. The females have human-like breasts to make enough milk for their babies (remember, they have crazy high metabolism rates). The babies are small enough to hold in your hand without any trouble. The babies are born blind, albino, and very soft shells. They stay inside the mother's shell for a week until the babies eyes open, their colors come in, and their shells harden. They have wide hips to give birth to the babies, which come out as balls (closed shells) and are born in the mother's shell (built in nests). The babies can finally come out of their mother's shell after a week of development, but the mother still takes care of them until they are 5 or 6 years old. They mature at 5-6 years. Their lifespans are 12-13 years in the wild, but up to 30 years in captivity! The built in nests (the soft, thick, cotton-like fur inside of the shells) are in both genders, this fur can also be used for warmth in cold nights. The babies don't have enough size or mass to keep themselves warm, so they rely on the mother's nest-like fur until they are 2-3 years old. Adults are 3 ft. tall, males are usually sightly taller than females. They have retractable claws too. They can only stand upright and not on all fours. They have thumbs to grasp anything. They have shock absorber surrounding their brain to keep it from being hurt by rolling into a hard surface too hard. Their collar bone is loose so they can be flexible enough to curl up into their shells without a problem. (I am sorry if the skeleton isn't exactly perfect, I never drew a skeleton before).

Behavior: they value each other. They live in colonies, they build their home structures out of wood, tunnels, rocks, and whatever else they can find/make. These are very smart creatures, so they know what they're doing. They have long childhoods (5-6 years) so they have enough time to learn. They are often nice and kind to each other and any other creature that doesn't eat them. They can often give each other gifts and have turns to take care of the babies (babies are precious and loved among this species) They can also differ which baby is which, they know who's who due to colors, texture of shell, and personalities. They can be as smart as chimpanzees! They are also very trainable. There will often be a sentry on look out for any sign of potential predators, they take turns doing this. They all have jobs to contribute to their colony that they take turns doing. The kids learn how to do these jobs. These jobs are fixing/improving their colony, hunting/gathering, making tools, nursing (females only), construction working, teaching kids, sentry, cleaning kids (parents only), and doctors (helping others, males only)

Mating: The males have a long and flexible penis that they can tuck into their "nests" to hide it. They need it to be this long to go into the female. The female has 3 holes in her shell, one for pooping, one for peeing, and one for a vagina. The male does...well...you know. And the baby is born inside the mother's shell-nest. It takes 3 months for the babies to develop before being born.
